Feature length scripted drama doc exploring how Prince Albert rose to power during his time married to Queen Victoria, and how he helped to shape modern Britain

Staring Gareth David-Lloyd (Torchwood) and Olivia Hallinan (Larkrise to Candleford) and narrated by Samantha Bond, the film tells the untold story of how the 20-year-old ‘Pauper Prince’ rose from obscurity in Germany to become one of the most powerful men in the world. Drawing on private letters, memoirs and historical written accounts, as well as expert insight from leading historians, Albert is revealed as a man who faced great prejudice when he first came to Britain, but outmanoeuvred his opponents and won over both the establishment and the nation to become the People’s Prince.

Albert becomes a driving force behind the industrial revolution, but also fought for the welfare of the downtrodden working classes. He manages to overcome his deep frustrations of having no official role, to become the power behind the throne. With Victoria revealed as a petulant and tempestuous wife, her nine pregnancies leave her increasingly disinterested in her duties as Queen, and so Albert takes on her workload. Victoria becomes ever more dependent on her husband, with her excessive neediness putting further strains on their marriage.

With the success of his Great Exhibition and the founding of the museums of South Kensington, Albert continues to take on more responsibilities. As the pressure mounts, he steadily works himself into an early grave. With his premature death at the age of 42, Victoria would mourn her husband for the rest of her long life. His remarkable legacy is often forgotten, but we see how he wanted to make things better – a driving force for the early Victorian age - and shaped the British monarchy as we know it today.
